DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, has launched a new direct Less than Container Load[1] (LCL) Service from Port Kelang, Malaysia to Los Angeles, USA and Shanghai, China. With this new service offering, DHL now serves 54 destinations in the USA with its inland network via Los Angeles and through Shanghai, DHL is able to provide direct service in China with fast and reliable transit times.

The launch of the new direct LCL service capitalizes on the local trade landscape as USA and China remain as Malaysia’s top five trading partners. Malaysia is China’s second largest trading partner, after Singapore. Since 1997, Malaysia's total trade with China has consistently registered double-digit growth annually. Total trade between Malaysia and China in 2008 increased by 10.3 percent to RM130.1 billion, with total import and export totalling RM66.9 billion and RM63.2 billion respectively.[2] In 2008, exports to the USA totalled RM82.74 billion (12.47% of total exports) and imports from the USA totalled RM56.45 billion (10.82% of total imports).[3]
“The launch of the new direct LCL service from Port Kelang to Los Angeles and Shanghai extends our extensive network capabilities in Asia Pacific. DHL leads the market with our LCL freight handled annually via 45,000 point-pairs, and since the start of 2009, we have introduced 17 direct services from China, Thailand, Japan, India as well as Malaysia to key cities around the world, enabling Malaysian businesses to tap into an unrivalled network and leverage opportunities in global markets,” said Amadou Diallo, Chief Executive Officer, DHL Global Forwarding, South Asia Pacific.
“The new guaranteed weekly direct LCL services will enable shipments to arrive up to a week earlier through Danmar Lines, DHL's in-house carrier,” said Reto Pergher, Managing Director, DHL Global Forwarding Malaysia. “The LCL service allows DHL customers to use full interactive Tracking & Tracing services apart from the seamless door-to-door LCL service which is controlled fully by DHL. This includes pick-up at any location in Malaysia, consolidation and deconsolidation, delivery at destination and customs clearance. In addition, the service also offers in-house feeder systems covering inland points in China and the USA.”
“DHL handles more than 2,000,000 cubic metres of LCL freight annually. With a strong in-house LCL service built on national and multinational gateways focusing on optimal cargo flows and services, we are proud to stay ahead of the competition where customers have peace of mind when using our services,” said Clas Thorell, Head of LCL Management Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.
The launch of direct services from Malaysia to USA and China marks the introduction of 17 new direct LCL routes launched by DHL in 2009, as the market leader continues to expand its global footprint. DHL’s routes launched this year include:
1 Less than Container Load (LCL) refers to smaller amounts of ocean freight cargo that are insufficient to fill a Full Container Load (FCL) on its own. The service is widely used by customers across many industries as it offers greater flexibility in the management of supply chains by being able to ship smaller quantities on a timelier basis.
