DHL launches new weekly direct LCL services from Indonesia to USA and Germany

DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, has launched two guaranteed weekly Less than Container Load[1] (LCL) services connecting Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port to Los Angeles in the United States of America (USA) and Hamburg in Germany. Tanjung Priok is Indonesia’s busiest port and the two new LCL services provide Indonesian exporters a faster and more competitive ocean freight option for shipments to these key export markets.

In 2008, Indonesia’s non-oil exports to the USA totaled over US$12.5 billion, making the USA the second largest export market for Indonesia after Japan, while exports to Germany in the same period reached US$2.5 billion.[2] In the first five months of 2009, Indonesian exports to the USA amounted to US$3.9 billion, while exports to Germany reached US$784 million.[3]

Amadou Diallo, Chief Executive Officer, DHL Global Forwarding, South Asia Pacific, said, “The launch of the latest direct service from Jakarta to Los Angeles and Hamburg enables businesses in Indonesia to tap into our unparalleled global LCL network and extend their footprint into overseas markets. As businesses continue to face increasing cost pressures, our direct LCL service offers customers greater cost efficiency and shorter transit times while enhancing their competitive edge.”

Operated by Danmar Lines, DHL’s in-house carrier, these new weekly direct LCL services enables shipments to arrive up to a week earlier compared to current services. Exporters using DHL’s new LCL services to Los Angeles and Hamburg will see their shipments arriving at the destination in 22 and 25 days respectively. Shipments arriving in Los Angeles can then be further delivered to an additional 54 destinations in the USA through DHL’s inland network.

Steve Ryan, Managing Director, DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia, said, “The introduction of our LCL service in Indonesia supports the government’s plans to turn Tanjung Priok Port into an international hub which can compete with other ports in the region. Going beyond port to port, DHL’s LCL service also offers a complete end-to-end supply chain solution that includes pick-up at origin, consolidation and deconsolidation, delivery at destination and customs clearance.”

As a global leader in LCL, DHL carries more than 97% of its total volumes in-house. The in-house systems and strong global network enables the control of cargo flow, information flow, speed, accuracy, cost efficiency and reliability. All LCL services are also accompanied by DHL’s first-class IT solutions such as DHL Track & Trace and other tools to allow full visibility of its customers’ cargo throughout the supply chain.

“Operating the world’s largest LCL network, DHL handles more than 2,000,000 cubic meters of LCL freight handled annually via 45,000 point-pairs. Backed by our expertise in handling LCL, the introduction of our direct services from Indonesia to USA and Germany will further propel DHL in the industry,” said Clas Thorell, Head of LCL Management Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.

The launch of direct services from Indonesia to USA and Germany marks the introduction of 19 new direct LCL routes launched by DHL in 2009, as the market leader continues to expand its global footprint. DHL’s routes launched this year include:

  • Chennai, India to Felixstowe, UK
  • Shenzhen, China to Hamburg, Germany; Genoa, Italy; Southampton, United Kingdom; Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Antwerp, Belgium; Le Havre, France and Vancouver, Canada
  • Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan to Chicago, USA
  • Bangkok, Thailand to Los Angeles, USA; Hamburg, Germany and Tokyo, Japan
  • Shenzhen, China to New York, USA
  • Port Kelang, Malaysia, to Los Angeles, USA; Shanghai, China and Hamburg, Germany

1 Less than Container Load (LCL) refers to smaller amounts of ocean freight cargo that are insufficient to fill a Full Container Load (FCL) on its own. The service is widely used by customers across many industries as it offers greater flexibility in the management of supply chains by being able to ship smaller quantities on a more timely basis.
