DHL Launches "Logistics Without Borders" - The Premier End-to-End, Integrated Cross-Border Supply Chain Solution

  • Innovative solution eliminates complexities and minimizes risks inherent in U.S.-Mexico border crossings

DHL, the global market leader in the logistics industry, today launched Logistics Without Borders, an end-to-end supply chain solution that connects suppliers, carriers and end-users on both sides of the border. The solution leverages the expertise of DHL's Global Forwarding and Supply Chain divisions in providing companies shipping across the U.S.-Mexico border one-stop access to the tools, expertise and services necessary to simplify the process and ensure shipments reach their destinations securely and on time.

Logistics Without Borders offers global capabilities on both sides of the border and includes a wide range of services in transportation, U.S. and Mexico customs and brokerage, bonded warehousing, transport management and cross-docking, and systems and document management. Intra-country extended services, such as in-plant services, vendor managed inventory, and supply chain analysis and design can also be bundled into a seamless solution.

Moving supplies and finished goods across the U.S.-Mexico border is a necessity for many companies. However, sourcing and manufacturing in Mexico comes with a number of challenges including security, customs compliance and border congestion at the top of the list. To overcome these challenges, the DHL solution leverages proven services in security, customs brokerage, and optimized border-crossing timing and locations.

"We looked at the pain points companies experience in crossing the border and systematically solved each one," explained Luis A. Coppel, regional vice president of the southern border and a licensed customs broker for DHL Global Forwarding. "For example, many of our customers struggle to receive accurate and timely information on their raw material and finished goods movements.  We developed a robust real-time web-based IT solution, customized for the needs of our US/Mexico border customers.  The system includes modules for cross-dock, warehousing, vendor-managed inventory, distribution and Mexican customs brokerage - all with industry-leading reporting and visibility capabilities."

The solution also addresses the supply chain fragmentation that can occur at the border when handoffs are made to multiple providers without having holistic oversight of the process. The Logistics Without Borders network of warehousing, information systems, transportation and customs brokerage services are backed by an integrated information technology platform that offers a single chain of custody and delivers complete visibility (including bilingual) of every item in the supply chain. This results in greater shipment reliability, ensuring product security, on-time delivery, smaller safety stock, lower inventory, and better support for just-in-time and lean manufacturing processes.

The Logistics Without Borders network also includes dedicated competency centers staffed by DHL customs and supply chain experts. Customers have a trustworthy and reliable partner at the border to help reduce administrative burdens, ensure shipments clear in a timely fashion, and avoid penalties, fines and loss of permits. Customers also benefit from technologies and processes that ensure optimal crossing lanes and mode of transit, and that minimize delays and bottlenecks at the border.

"Logistics Without Borders reshapes the way logistics is handled across the border through process-driven, customized services that are backed by state-of-the-art technology systems," said Gary Allen, vice president of product development and innovation for DHL's Supply Chain division in the Americas, including Exel in the United States and Canada. "The key to making this solution work, however, is the experience our company brings. Unlike most brokers at the border, we have the expertise to address industry-specific concerns. And we have an exceptional record of error-free crossings."
